چکیده

We perform direct 3-dimensional numerical simulations for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in a periodic box of size 2π threaded by strong uniform magnetic fields. We use a pseudo-spectral code with hyperviscosity and hyperdiffusivity to solve the incompressible MHD equations. We analyze the structure of the eddies as a function of scale. A straightforward calculation of anisotropy in wavevector space shows that the anisotropy is scale-independent. We discuss why this is not the true scaling law and how the curvature of large-scale magnetic fields affects the power spectrum and leads to the wrong conclusion. When we correct for this effect, we find that the anisotropy of eddies depends on their size: smaller eddies are more elongated than larger ones along local magnetic field lines. The results are consistent with the scaling law k̃‖ ∼ k̃ ⊥ proposed by Goldreich and Sridhar (1995, 1997). Here k̃‖ (and k̃⊥) are wavenumbers measured relative to the local magnetic field direction. However, we see some systematic deviations which may be a sign of limitations to the model, or our inability to fully resolve the inertial range of turbulence in our simulations. Particle Heating by Nonlinear Alfvénic Turbulence in Adafs

Particle heating in advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) by nonlinear MHD (Alfvénic) turbulence is investigated. Such turbulence with highly-fluctuating magnetic fields, B̃ ∼ B0, is believed to be naturally produced by the magnetic shearing instability near the nonlinear saturation. It is shown that the energy is dissipated in the parallel cascade, which occurs due to nonlinear compressib...

Simulations of Electron Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

We present numerical simulations of electron magnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) and electron reduced MHD (ERMHD) turbulence. Comparing scaling relations, we find that both EMHD and ERMHD turbulence show similar spectra and anisotropy. We develop new techniques to study anisotropy of EMHD turbulence. Our detailed study of anisotropy of EMHD turbulence supports our earlier result of k‖ ∝ k ⊥ scaling, whe...

Ordinary and Viscosity-damped Mhd Turbulence

We compare the properties of ordinary strong magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in a strongly magnetized medium with the recently discovered viscosity-damped regime. We focus on energy spectra, anisotropy, and intermittency. Our most surprising conclusion is that in ordinary strong MHD turbulence the velocity and magnetic fields show different high-order structure function scalings. Moreover ...

Sub-Alfvénic Non-Ideal MHD Turbulence Simulations with Ambipolar Diffusion: I. Turbulence Statistics

Most numerical investigations on the role of magnetic fields in turbulent molecular clouds (MCs) are based on ideal magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD). However, MCs are weakly ionized, so that the time scale required for the magnetic field to diffuse through the neutral component of the plasma by ambipolar diffusion (AD) can be comparable to the dynamical time scale. We have performed a series of 256 ...

Anisotropy of Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence and Polarization of the Spectral Lines of Molecules

The anisotropy of velocities in MHD turbulence is demonstrated explicitly by calculating the velocity gradients as a function of direction in representative simulations of decaying turbulence. It follows that the optical depths of spectral lines are anisotropic when there is MHD turbulence, and that this anisotropy influences the polarization characteristics of the emergent radiation. We calcul...
